Fossils of Fuel

<< Location: Houtskär Island, August 2022 >>

Decommissioned fuel pumps lie neglected along the shores of the island overlooking listless harbours. They stand now as relics of the petrol age. Most survived the 1970's oil crisis but not the unrelenting changes in climate that sweep across the Southern Archipelago a generation later. Their oxidised metals and degraded enamels gently expire into the shallow soil to reveal a low-tech matrix of cogs, dials and obsolete rotary pumps.
